Last week G & I drove to St Simon's with the MIL for some fun in the sun. And it was fun... and a test of my patience at times! A two year old at the beach is sometimes a lot to handle!
We drove over on Sunday and had a Mother's Day brunch with family in Macon. Not only did this help break up the drive for us, but it also gave G some time to run around. Now, that did mean that I didn't get to eat much of my brunch, but... I could stand to miss a few meals! We drove the back roads from Dublin to St Simon's and although the MIL is terrible with directions, we made it just in time for dinner. We stopped in Brunswick for a quick trip to the store for some essentials. At the dairy section, G started crying and backing into the case, pointing at something on the floor. Urine. He, somehow, managed to redirect his, um, private part to point out of the diaper. So, he had peed all over himself and the floor. We left quickly.
After dinner, we went for a walk. I love the feel of the sand in your toes and the sound of the waves beating the shore. G would have NONE of it. He wouldn't take off his shoes (we changed out of the urine soaked sneakers) and wouldn't get anywhere NEAR the water. We ended up retreating to the pool area where he met an adorable little girl, Shelby, who is 2 1/2 and from B'ham. She copied every move G made, so he had a grand time running and jumping and leading her around with his crazy antics. The cutest part was when he went down the stairs to the beach by sitting on each step. She would sit next to him and he would immediately sit on the step below. She would follow him, and so on. This was the first time he actually stood in the sand by himself!! Thank you, Shelby!
The next morning, we went for an early walk. G walked a little but mostly he was curious about the sea reeds and crab holes. We walked a good distance, but I ended up carrying him back. After breakfast, we headed out to the beach. He actually played in the sand for a long while... then a wave got his suit wet. It was all over. So, we hung out at the pool. First the kiddie pool and then the big pool. Shelby came out and this cute little boy named Will (3), whose mother talked on her cell phone the entire time she was out there. And Emerald (also 3) and another child who never got yelled at, so I don't know her name. Emerald was a piece of work. She had a toy alligator that G loved and played with. She decided she wanted it, so I made G give it back to her. A little while later, she offered it to him again. When he went to take it, she yanked it away and said, "Just kidding!" Little punk. Her mother swore she had never done that before. (right) Later on, Emerald did something else nasty and her mother told her that "God would be disappointed in her." Really? I think that God would be disappointed in a parent using God to pressure a THREE year old into behaving!
After lunch and a nap, we went back out to the pool. Same crowd of kids. Same fun. But we realized we did not prepare ourselves with the proper pool toys. After dinner, we went to Target for some new stuff. Rained all the way home, but it was a beautiful storm.
Tuesday was overcast, so hung out a lot. Tooled around the island, went to the pier and the playground. After lunch and a nap, went to the Bailey Boys store. That was fun. Huge selection of clothes for at least half off of retail. Gorgeous corduroy pea coats for boys, $25! No 3T's though. Urgh. A friend called from home while I was shopping. I had nominated D for an award, and he won! The problem was that he had not given his RSVP to the dinner. So, I had to make up a story to get him to go to dinner, just so he could receive his award!! But he enjoyed it and has a lovely plaque for his achievement!
Wednesday, was as beautiful as Monday so back to the pool. G kept saying, "no beach, mommy, no beach." After cleaning up, we went down the the village by the pier for lunch. D drove up on Wednesday and got there shortly after lunch. After a nap, he went out to the pool with us.
Thursday was great but a little cooler. G and I hung out at the pool some more. D wanted seafood so we went out to eat. Went to an AWFUL place down at the village. But D got his seafood!!! After dinner we went for a walk on the beach. For the first time, G took off his shoes! And he really got into it. He was running like a little sand crab... away from us! It was hysterical.
Firday, we hit the road back home. Piddled in Dublin for lunch, stopped a couple more times to save us sitting in ATL traffic and made it in time for G's bedtime. What a week!
