Quiet Time

You ever wake up in the morning all refreshed and ready to start the day and IMMEDIATELY get shot down by some circumstance that turns your fabulous attitude right into a funk?  Yesterday was one of those days for me.  Woke up and couldn't see the clock, which is on the cable box.  At first I thought that I had accidentally turned the box off.  Turned over to see D's clock... not there either.  huh.  Then I heard D downstairs bailing water.  The power was off... and the sump pump doesn't work without power. There went my fantastic attitude right down the drain, pun intended.

The power apparently had gone off around 5:30, and I was in oblivious, joyous slumber and thankfully so was G!!  But after jumping out of bed & realizing it was actually 7:30, I rushed to wake G up.  We were already an hour past our routine wake up of 6 or 6:30, and I didn't want to battle him at bedtime!!  So, I got G up and ready for school.  D took a shower, thank goodness for the gas water heater.  And then I had the very quiet house to myself for what felt like an eternity.

I cleaned house, sadly I could do everything but vacuum without the power on.  I sorted & folded laundry.  I changed sheets & made beds.  I painted some projects for G's big boy room.  I put new lining in the kitchen cabinets (been on the to do list since our last trip to IKEA which was a long while ago).  Then I got a little stir crazy.  Around 10, I tried the iPod to give my ears a rest from all the quiet, and it was dead.  I almost panicked.  About 10:30, I used my cell to call my mom & some friends...  Finally, at almost exactly 11, the power stirred on.  The cable was still out but at least I could play the iPod on the speakers.  And the sump pump started working again so I didn't have to check on it anymore.  And the ice machine started pumping out fresh ice.  And I could use the vacuum on the rugs.  And ...  shucks, because the cable was still out, no Internet and no home phone!  No facebook, no email, no Hometown Headlines, no FoxNews!

Last Friday, when the power went out around dinner time it was actually kinda nice.  G, D & I watched the rain & golf ball size hail, colored and played with G's sticker books.  We lit candles and read by candlelight.  It was kinda sweet and fun, but home alone with no power is a bore. I know that I should savor the time, but I missed my guys and I missed the noise to substitute them when they aren't around.

And now my house is too clean.
